What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a level 5 internationally recognised qualification for teaching English to adults. It is widely believed by many native speakers of English that, because they know English, they are qualified to teach it. However, this isn’t the case, as before going into a classroom, it’s necessary to know skills and techniques such as:
- classroom management & instruction giving,
- how to grade your language,
- how to analyse and teach vocabulary/grammar,
- how to check understanding and use error correction techniques,
- the different between STT (student talking-time) and TTT (teacher talking-time).
The CELTA covers all this and more, and includes 6 hours of assessed teaching practice, which is another reason it is so well respected.

The CELTA can also be used as the first step to gaining a Delta (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults), which can be taken 2 years after passing the CELTA. As well as this, it’s also the perfect addition to any students taking a master’s in ESOL or ELT as the majority of these university courses do not have assessed teaching practice. It’s also perfect for new graduates looking to travel or for a career in teaching English, current state-school teachers who would like to pick up extra hours over the summer, retirees who either want to work part-time or volunteer, and anyone who wants a change in their career.

Requirements:
- C1-C2 level of English
- Minimum age of 18
- Educated up to at least A Level or equivalent
